What is The Feldenkrais® Method?

A system of movement education that harnesses the nervous system through gentle movement and the development of self-awareness to improve one’s ability to move with specificity and ease; to reduce pain and stress; and to enhance creativity and overall health and well-being.
Three big benefits that I emphasize in my practice are:

Clarity.
Feldenkrais lessons help you quickly develop awareness of physical obstacles and the emotional burdens embedded within. It can feel like a series of encounters that with time loosens both the physical and emotional grip.

Independence.
Being present offers a freedom to explore. Actions that seemed impossible, become attainable. Discover how much more you are capable of than you thought.

Creativity.
Awareness and confidence leads you toward trying more expressive and meaningful movement. Experimentation and play introduce you to an even deeper sense enjoyment!

2 distinct ways to practice:

Functional Integration® or FI®

During a Functional Integration® or FI® lesson, the practitioner guides you with gentle touch to explore functional movement possibilities, supporting the release of tension and pain, and returning to ease and pleasure of moving, breathing, and being. You may lie on a padded table designed for the work, or do some of the lesson sitting or standing.

Awareness Through Movement® or ATM®

During an ATM® lesson, the practitioner verbally guides you through a lesson exploring a specific kind of functional movement. The instructions are specific and systematic and designed to help you progress slowly toward a certain action or set of actions. The instructions should be regarded as secondary to your own comfort and need for rest through out the lesson. Lessons are conducted laying or sitting on the floor on a mat, sitting in a chair, or standing.

First sessions are 75 minutes, and sometimes a little longer. We will start with a conversation about your history and things that you would like to improve or make easier. We can do FI® or ATM® or a combination of practices within the lesson, discovering what is effective for the moment.

Upcoming ATM® Classes

ATM Class @ Scribble

Starts on September 24
Wednesdays
9 - 10:15am
5541 York Blvd, 90042
$20 per class

Sliding scale available, email thegoodconditions@gmail.com

Feldenkrais ATM lessons offer a stage for us to sense and explore different kinds of functional movement in our own bodies through slow, small and gentle movement. In class, you are guided toward noticing inconvenient or troublesome movement patterns and finding your way to freer, easful, and intentional movement.

Come with curiosity, a desire to increase your awareness of yourself; and openness to learning through an organic process that requires self-study and direction.

While anyone can always drop in to a class, participants who attend regularly will have the chance to dive more deeply into a movement or functional motif which will be introduced every 2-3 weeks.

Best for adults ages 18 and up, all experience levels. Requires auditory instruction.
